Gummy Smile
A beautiful smile is the balance between nice teeth and nice gum level. Some of us may show too much gum when smiling and because of it, we may not want to smile so much to prevent showing the excess gum.
Studies have shown that participants start noticing the excess gum when a person smile when it is more than 3-4mm. Ideally, the amount of gum shown should be 0-2mm when smiling.
There are normally 4 causes for gummy smile
1. Square teeth
2. Hypermobile lips (lip moves too much)
3. Short upper lip
4. Vertical Maxillary Excess (overgrowth of upper jaw)
Options for managing gummy smile include from
1. Laser gum contouring
2. Botulinum toxin
3. Lip repositioning
4. Jaw surgery.
